Speakers: Michaela Rai - American Alzheimer’s Association The walk to end Alzheimer’s! Bob Nystrom introduced our speaker and shared that the American Alzheimer’s Association walk is on Sept 21 at Forestview. He will have a team for his wife and all are invited to join him (more info coming). This LINK has more info.
Bob explained that Rachel's dementia began in 2014 and progressed in 2018 to the point where she needed more support. The care giving was intense over the last 3 to 4 years and she is now in a memory care facility in the Twin Cities. He described it as the "slow goodbye" and family wants to live with our memories when they were healthy, not as an Alzheimer’s patient. Bob said the AMA is a great organization with over 80% of all gifts going to research.
Michaela said that dementia is not a specific disease but is rather a general term for the impaired ability to remember, think, or make decisions that interferes with doing everyday activities. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia. Though dementia mostly affects older adults, it is not a part of normal aging. There are over 100 thousand living with alzheimers in MN and it has a huge impact on care givers too. Today over 6M in American live with it.
The Association has a 24/7/help line, free education, and Rotary International has the Alzheimer's Dementia Rotary Action Group (more info LINK).
We can lower our risks by getting moving, good sleep, eating healthy, and protecting our heads. Our club can have exhibit space at any walk, start our own rotary team, and volunteer. Tonight at Dunmires they are planning the Brainerd event and all welcome.
