Paula Chapulis opened the meeting with announcements. The Brainerd Sunrise Rotary Club would like to invite the Brainerd Afternoon Rotary Club to join them in their first ever GOLF EVENT. Scheduled for August 22nd at Legacy (Dutch’s course). Shotgun start at 8:30am. Golf 18 holes w/cart for a discounted price of $125.00 plus tax (Normally $159). A time for us to connect and have a little friendly competition. For those of you that don’t golf, it will still be fun as they are playing by “scramble rules” so just pick a better golfer than you. Bring a friend, a potential new Rotary Member (or even a past member), or just rub elbows with the cool folks you already call Rotarians. Contact Dolly Matten for more info at 218-828-4567 or this link.
If you are interested in our club's international committee please reach out to Adam Rees. They will be meeting once a quarter just before our noon Tuesday meeting.
Rotary got a booth at the county fair for this Saturday and Heather sent out a sign up sheet.
Lastly, please sell peaches and share that all proceeds raised from this peach sale fund international humanitarian projects in 3rd world countries. For 2023 and 2024 our club’s focus is on Cambodia. We are supporting a $200k two-year global grant. Two of our Rotarians and their spouses visited this ongoing operation and learned that Cambodia is one of the poorest countries in the world and in the 1970’s over 25% of the population was executed which crippled their economy, destroyed the education and health systems, and halted their religious and cultural practices. Please support this fundraiser by purchasing peaches today and/or contributing a financial gift to improve the lives of rural Cambodian children one village at a time.
Speaker: Jessica Whales special ed teacher and Andre Rusk principal, spoke on the Warrior Warehouse, aka school food pantry for Brainerd High School. Statistics:
● BPS has roughly a 46% free and reduced rate, 25% identified (SNAP, MFIP, FDPIR benefit holders). This is up from last year’s rate of 31.6%. Some schools have seen a nearly 20 point jump.
● BHS has approx 25% Free/Reduced Forestview F/R is at 44.5%.
● Crow Wing County food insecurity for children is around 15.8%
● 19% of those children live in households that do NOT qualify for F/R but still have trouble receiving adequate meals.
Students are allowed to “shop” without a staff member. They get the key from the Student Success Center, nurse or several other staff members. There are posters up and a QR code they can scan to go to a Google Form to fill out if they want someone to deliver their items. They take what they need with no questions asked. There is no tracking system other than a tally count. This was modeled after the CLC food pantry. There are hygiene items as well as food and clothing. They limit donations of 2nd hand clothing due to quality issues. Students can make requests for specific items as we have funds for specific items.
