Luke Christiansen and Tim Thompson with Crow Wing Power came in and provided an update on their growth and paint a picture on local energy.
The Crow Wing Power team highlighted their strong reliability and member-focused culture. The team noted that outages remain uncommon despite their 5,600 miles of line, of which nearly half is overhead line in dense tree areas. The cooperative’s work includes energy studies and managing peak demand by coordinating residential heating and cooling loads, irrigation systems, and other resources efforts that help control costs for members.
The cooperative is also expanding options for local energy use. Its residential EV pilot offers lower cost, off-peak, charging at home and two existing fast chargers in the community, with more on the way. Crow Wing Power has about 3.5 megawatts of solar connected across 222 member installations and is exploring how battery storage, both residential and larger-scale, could support the grid. Safety remains central to the Co-op. Whether it's when reviewing solar connections, particularly to protect line crews during outages, or when evaluating their current facilities. As road safety was a major factor when greenlighting a new building project.
Plans are moving forward for a new, ~135,000 sqft facility near the Highway 371 split. The current site presents safety challenges for large trucks and equipment when entering or leaving the drive, while the new building is intended to provide indoor storage and improved working conditions. Construction is expected to take 18 to 24 months after a planned spring groundbreaking.
