Paula reminded us that for RYLA Eric Charpentier is recruiting High School student applications until April 30th. Our club has a budget for 2 students this year and we only have one application. Camp Confidence needs help on May 13 with some projects and clean up.
At the 2024 ROTARY DISTRICT 5580 CONFERENCE our club was awarded the district's largest per club contribution to polio plus for more than 60 members at $13,800. Buford thanked our members for their giving last year. Peter Nelson, Adam Rees and Samanta Candia attended this years meetings on Fargo ND.
The District Conference was filled with impactful speakers to educate us on mental health issues, with inspiring messages on how we can help the environment, with our always energetic and talented exchange youth, and engaging entertainment that brought our Rotary family together with joy. One more amazing thing. $100,000 was raised for Polio Plus. Please consider attending next years District Conference and become better educated and engaged Rotarians.
Aaron Antony reminded us the next ditch cleanup will be April 30th with a 5:00pm start. Food and drinks will follow the event. An online sign up on ClubRunner was sent by an email or use this link.
Michelle reminded us to check out tickets for this years Reverse Raffle. It will take place on May 16th with a goal to sell 300 tickets. To date 140 tickets were checked out. Please pick them up from Carol. As we sell them we need to bring the ticket purchaser info and funds back to Allie and Carol.
Speaker: Adam Rees presented part 1 of his medical mission trip to Pursat Cambodia. As a reminder our club gave $5k that was matched by our district with another $5k to support Sustainable Cambodia's global 2 year grant. The goal is to "Improve the health of Cambodian rural villagers in the Pursat province." The principals guiding this effort include: Greatest Good, Evidence based, Doable with available resources, Leverage Sustainable Cambodia Successes.
In November 2023 Rotarian's Adam Rees (Brainerd) and Floyd Hatch (Salt Lake City) assessed the Cambodian medical system focusing on the needs of villagers in the Pursat Province. The genesis of this trip came from Rotary’s Sustainable Cambodia February 2023 trips. Since then we completed a demographic and population health analysis and summarized our trip notes with photographs from our site visits to the nation, regional and local healthcare providers.
During the Pol Pot genocide the entire medical system was destroyed with only a few medical providers remaining. When Cambodia was liberated by the Vietnamese many foreign countries (France, Vietnam, Thailand, South Korea, and Japan to name a few) came to help the country rebuild the entire medical system. Today the progress is impressive but still lags western medicine in many ways. The system lacks capital, equipment, human resources, and insurance for the working poor rural villagers to manage the health of the population.
Adam's presentation exploring the site visits will continue on May 7, 2024. Please consider visiting Cambodia in 2024/25 (2024: Nov 16th to Nov 25th 2025: Jan 11th to Jan 20th ), $995/pp.
