Speaker: Heidi Gould, Habitat for Humanity, is the new volunteer coordinator. They are starting their 130th home. She shared relevant facts about the home building program like it takes 1300 volunteer hours on average per homer. In the Brainerd lakes area they are now building for 7 different families and this year they will be starting another 4 in Cass Lake. In 2020/21 they sold 1530 tons in Restore and just completed a major expansion. She offered the club tours of the new 43k foot space. The store covers all operating costs plus some so that 100% of any donation goes to new homes. They have not set an opening day yet. They are trying to raise $500k to pay for the large new space and are at $158K today. The new location has 2 loading dock doors to separate pick up and drop off activity.
Q and A followed: Selection criteria includes a requirement to pay the mortgage, and 200 hours volunteerism per home. If a family leaves the home, Habitat has a right to repurpose the home. All new homes are slab on grade, no stairs, with in floor heat. They cover 4 counties even though most homes are in the Brainerd Baxter area.
