President Adam Rees chaired the meeting at Rotary Park.
Rotary Announcements:
Aaron Antony: Fall Ditch Pick up will occur on Monday, October 7th. We will meet at Safari North. 20-25 people are needed for this event. Please mark your calendars and watch your email for a sign-up.
Aaron Antony: The Arboretum Haunted Trail is coming up. Please consider volunteering your time. Volunteering benefits our club and reduces our room rental fees.
Adam Rees: Club members have an open invitation to attend Club Board meetings. Our next Club board meeting is Tuesday, October 8th beginning at 10:45 am at the Northland Aboretum.
Our meeting will be held upstairs at the Northland Arboretum on October 22, 2024.
New Member:
Derrick Owens was reinducted into the Club.
Rotary Park:
Pete Nelson spoke about Rotary Park. John Forrest came up with the idea for Rotary Park. The Park is currently 195 acres, making it the second largest city park in Minnesota. In 2018, the Club built the gateway arch. The pavilion was built for the Club's 100th Anniversary project and donated to the City of Brainerd in September 2021.
Future plans for Rotary Park include the solar project, which could not have been accomplished without the efforts of David Winkelman; a fireplace or campfire ring; and an observation deck over the cement structure by the river.
Pete gave special recognition to John Forrest, Adam Rees, Heather Kelm, Donn Peterson, Buford Johnson, and Marc Halverson for their work at the Park.
Sergeant at Arms: Aaron Antony fined those of us who have not decorated for Halloween. He took everyone else's money in a variety of sports related fines.
Speaker: Zoey Smith; Paige Nelson; and Angelina Thomas - RYLA
RYLA stands for Rotary Youth Leadership Award. Students are nominated to attend and the award is the leadership camp itself. Zoey, Paige, and Angelina were sponsored by our Club this year.
Zoey is a senior at BHS. She's active in FFA, track, and softball. She called RYLA a transformative event. She's already started applying what she learned at camp to her everyday life, and she has plans to go back in the future as a facilitator.
Paige is a student at Lake Region Christian School. She's active in volleyball and softball. Paige is the granddaughter of Pete and Bonnie Nelson. Paige also enjoyed camp. She has been able to apply what she learned to the activities she's involved in at school.
Angelina called RYLA the best week of her life. Angelina is a junior at BHS. RYLA helped her get out of shell and connect with others.
