STRIVE

 

STRIVE - Students Taking Renewed Interest in the Value of Education is a Rotary sponsored program for academically challenged students.

STRIVE was started by Rotary Club of White Bear Lake.  Organized by Don Mooney in the late 1980's.

ØFundamental Premises

  • Regular Attendance is Essential (You are bound to learn something by being in a classroom and employers expect it)
     
  • Students Respond when Adults Pay Attention
  • Incentives will Keep Their Interest
     
  • Major Incentives are Scholarships for Post High School Studies

 

How STRIVE works

  • School Identifies Bottom 1/3 GPA Seniors
  • Students are Invited to Intro Meeting
  • Forms are Filled Out by Those Choosing to Participate in STRIVE
  • Meetings approx. 2/month during school year at school during the school day
  • Rotarians and volunteers act as mentors

  • Scholarships for Most Improved GPA
  • Scholarships for Best Attendance at STRIVE meetings
  • Recognition Dinner for Students and Parents at End of the School Year
  • Treats at Some Meetings (kids like to eat)
  • Others as Determined by Mentors
     

Scholarship Eligibility

  • Must complete School Graduation Requirements
  • Must Attend 75% or More of the Meetings
  • Must Improve GPA While in STRIVE
  • Must Enroll in an Accredited Institution
  • Must Use within 2 Years of the Award
  • Payment Jointly to Student and Institution
  • Payment Direct to Student or Parent only if proof is given that they have enrolled and that tuition has been paid

Mentor Requirements

  • Sincere Desire to Help Students Succeed

  • Work with Students Assigned to You

  • Show Students Respect and Expect the Same

  • When not Presenting, Listen and Avoid Lecturing

  • Check E-mail Regularly for Messages

  • Attend Most STRIVE Meetings

  • May need some flexibility in work schedule

  • Team mentoring may be an option

Outcomes

  • Motivate Underachieving Students to Perform up to Their Potential

  • Some will make a remarkable change

  • We can improve attitudes, but not IQ’s

  • We are not a chemical dependency treatment program nor a substitute
